Tmall Global is the most credible e-commerce address a foreign brand can have in China. When a Chinese consumer sees your product on Tmall Global, they know three things: the brand is real, the product is genuine, and the import process has been verified by Alibaba.
That credibility matters enormously in a market where counterfeit products erode consumer trust daily. For a foreign brand, Tmall Global is not just a sales channel. It is proof of legitimacy in the Chinese market.
46,000+ brands
International brands from 90 countries sell on Tmall Global in 2026. The platform processes over 50% of China’s cross-border B2C e-commerce volume. Being on Tmall Global does not guarantee sales. Not being on Tmall Global guarantees Chinese consumers cannot trust your import channel.
Tmall Global vs Tmall Domestic: The Key Difference
Tmall Domestic requires a Chinese entity, Chinese product registration, and Chinese business operations. It is the full-China market entry path and requires 12 to 24 months of regulatory groundwork for most product categories.
Tmall Global operates under the CBEC framework. Foreign brands sell from overseas or from bonded warehouses in China to Chinese consumers under cross-border trade rules. No Chinese entity required. No domestic product registration required in most categories.
The Real Costs of Tmall Global in 2026
The costs involved in opening and maintaining a Tmall Global flagship store fall into three categories. Most brands underestimate the third one.
Platform fees:
- Annual deposit (保证金): USD 10,000 to 50,000 depending on category. Refundable if you exit the platform in good standing.
- Annual technical service fee (服务费): USD 5,000 to 10,000 per year.
- Commission (佣金): 0.5% to 5% of GMV depending on category.
Store setup costs:
- Store design and development: RMB 20,000 to 80,000 for a professional flagship store design.
- Product listing localization: Mandarin copywriting and image adaptation to Chinese aesthetic standards.
- Photography and video: Chinese e-commerce standards require white-background detail shots, lifestyle imagery, and product demonstration video for every listing.
Operations and marketing (the underestimated third category):
- Customer service: Chinese consumers expect responses within 2 hours and pre-sale questions answered before purchase. This requires Mandarin-speaking customer service.
- Tmall advertising (直通车, 品牌特卖, 万相台): Without paid traffic, new stores receive minimal organic visibility. Budget RMB 20,000 to 50,000 per month in the first year.
- Promotional participation: Tmall’s major sale events (618, 11.11, 12.12) require advance inventory commitment. Not participating limits your algorithmic ranking.

The TP (Tmall Partner) Question
Tmall Partners are certified Alibaba-approved agencies that manage store operations on behalf of foreign brands. A TP handles daily store management, customer service, promotional planning, and Tmall advertising. They charge either a fixed monthly fee (typically RMB 15,000 to 40,000) or a revenue share (usually 3 to 8% of store GMV).
The risk with TPs: a TP managing 30 stores will prioritize their best-performing accounts. A foreign brand with modest initial volumes may receive the junior team. Vet your TP candidates by asking for their current client list, category specialization, and average store GMV across their portfolio.
How Tmall Global Fits Into a Distribution Strategy
The mistake I see most often: brands open a Tmall Global store, do minimum viable setup, invest nothing in marketing, and then wonder why sales are slow after 6 months. They conclude that “Tmall doesn’t work” and hand the store management to a distributor.
Handing Tmall Global store management to a Chinese distributor is one of the worst moves a foreign brand can make. The distributor now controls your brand flagship on China’s most important platform. When the distributor relationship goes wrong, recovering your own store access takes legal action.
The correct structure: you own your Tmall Global flagship. You may partner with a TP for operations. You keep pricing authority, promotional decisions, and customer data access in your own hands.
