Philippines Alcohol and Spirits Market: From a Distributor’s Perspective

The Philippines is Southeast Asia’s second-largest beer market and a growing opportunity for imported spirits. The distribution structure is unusual compared to other SEA markets — a few large conglomerates control most of the channel, and regional variation between Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao is significant.

Beer dominates, but spirits are growing

San Miguel Corporation controls over 90% of domestic beer production. Imported beer competes only in premium on-trade and modern retail. Spirits is where international brands find more room: whisky (Johnnie Walker, Jack Daniel’s) leads, followed by brandy (Emperador is locally produced and massive), and gin.

Craft spirits and premium imported gin are early-growth categories concentrated in Metro Manila — BGC, Makati, and Poblacion specifically.

How distribution works

Most imported alcohol moves through three large distributors: Consolidated Distillers of the Far East (ConDistil), MFT Group, and a smaller tier of specialist importers. The big distributors have the retail relationships. Specialist importers have the on-trade relationships and flexibility for smaller brands.

Key channels

  • Convenience stores — 7-Eleven Philippines (3,500+ stores) is a major alcohol retail channel, unusual for SEA. Getting listed here requires a distributor with existing 7-Eleven terms.
  • Robinsons and SM Supermarkets — the two main modern trade chains for imported spirits retail
  • On-trade Metro Manila — BGC and Makati bars are the primary test ground for premium and craft spirits
  • Provincial distributors — Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo each have separate distributor networks. National coverage claims from Manila distributors often mean nothing outside Luzon.

Compliance

Imported alcohol requires FDA Philippines registration, Bureau of Customs clearance, and BFAD-approved label. Excise tax on spirits is significant and tiered by alcohol content and value. Build this into your pricing model before the first shipment.
