Instant Retail in China: How Meituan and JD Now Are Reshaping What Distribution Looks Like

The expectation among Chinese urban consumers has shifted. Two-day delivery, which felt fast in 2020, now feels slow for most everyday purchases. The new baseline in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities is delivery within 30 to 60 minutes. This is instant retail (即时零售), and it is changing what distribution means for foreign brands in China.

Two platforms are driving this shift: Meituan (美团), the food delivery giant that has expanded into general merchandise delivery, and JD Now (京东小时达), JD’s same-hour delivery service integrated with local retail partners. Together, they serve over 300 Chinese cities and are growing their foreign product assortment aggressively.

300+ cities

Cities served by Meituan and JD Now instant retail in 2026. The combined instant retail market exceeded 600 billion RMB in 2025 and is projected to reach 1 trillion RMB by 2027. This is not a niche urban experiment. It is becoming the default delivery expectation for convenience and impulse categories.

What Instant Retail Means for Product Distribution

Traditional e-commerce moves products from bonded warehouses or distribution centers to consumers over 24 to 72 hours. Instant retail moves products from a local dark store, supermarket, or specialty retailer to a consumer’s door in 30 to 60 minutes. The infrastructure is fundamentally different.

For foreign brands, participating in instant retail requires products to be physically present in local retail points near where Chinese consumers live. This means either:

  • Distribution to retailers who are partners of Meituan or JD Now (supermarkets, convenience chains, specialty health stores, imported product retailers)
  • Operating a brand-owned dark store or mini-warehouse within the Meituan or JD Now fulfillment network
  • Partnering with a local distribution company who manages the retail placement and handles the Meituan/JD Now integration

None of these require your products to have Chinese import registration if you are supplying CBEC-cleared products to CBEC-authorized retailers. However, the product must physically be in China before the order is placed, which means some form of advance stock commitment is required.

Meituan Flash Delivery (美团闪购): How It Works for Foreign Brands

Meituan Flash Delivery sources products from local retail partners in a consumer’s immediate geography. When a consumer orders imported supplements, premium snacks, or international skincare from Meituan, the order goes to the nearest partner store with that product in stock, and a Meituan delivery rider collects and delivers it within 30 to 60 minutes.

For foreign brands, getting into Meituan Flash Delivery distribution requires getting your products into Meituan’s retail partner network. The practical path:

  • Establish distribution to O2O-friendly retail chains that partner with Meituan: Sam’s Club, Costco China, Ole imported food retailers, international chain convenience stores like FMLY (formerly FamilyMart China), and premium supermarkets like Freshippo (盒马) and Hema.
  • Partner with a specialized imported goods distributor who has existing Meituan Flash Delivery integration. These distributors stock imported products in dark store networks optimized for same-hour delivery.
  • Register directly as a Meituan Flash Delivery merchant if your brand has a physical retail presence in China (warehouse, showroom, or brand store).

JD Now (京东小时达): The Premium Instant Retail Channel

JD Now is JD.com’s same-hour delivery service that pulls from JD’s own retail stores (京东超市到家) and from authorized retail partners. JD Now’s product assortment skews toward the same premium categories that JD’s main platform is known for: health products, imported food, baby products, and quality household goods.

For foreign brands already selling on JD Worldwide, JD Now represents a complementary last-mile distribution upgrade. Products in JD’s bonded warehouse system can in some cases be allocated to JD Now local fulfillment points in major cities, enabling same-hour delivery from bonded stock without a separate domestic distribution arrangement.

The JD Now opportunity is most relevant for foreign brands in health supplements, premium imported food, and baby products, where the impulse or urgent purchase dynamic (running out of formula, last-minute supplement restock) makes same-hour delivery a real consumer value proposition rather than just convenience.

The Distribution Convergence Implication

Instant retail is converging online and offline distribution in a way that makes traditional “distributor manages offline, e-commerce team manages online” thinking obsolete. A single consumer order on Meituan might source from a retailer who received your product from an offline distributor, or from a JD Now dark store fed from your bonded warehouse. The distinction between e-commerce and physical distribution is collapsing.

Foreign brands that structure their China distribution with clear channel roles, who handles bonded warehouse, who manages retail placement, who runs instant retail fulfillment, and data-sharing agreements that let them see inventory levels and sell-through across all channels, are building supply chain resilience that distributor-dependent brands cannot match.
