Facebook in Indonesia: 210 Million Users and Why It Still Dominates

Every year someone says “Facebook is dying.” Then I look at my campaigns in Indonesia and see 210 million active Facebook users, some of the cheapest CPMs in Asia, and a community commerce system that drives more word-of-mouth purchasing than any other platform in the country.

Facebook is not dying in Indonesia. It is thriving. Here is how to use it.

210.4 million

Facebook users in Indonesia in April 2026. That is 73.5% of the entire population, the highest Facebook penetration rate in Southeast Asia.

Who Uses Facebook in Indonesia

  • Total users: 210 million (73.5% of population)
  • Gender split: 52.2% male, 47.8% female
  • Largest age group: 25 to 34 years old (79 million users)
  • Second largest: 35 to 44 years old (42 million users)

Unlike Instagram, Facebook reaches across age groups and across the archipelago, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. For brands targeting consumers outside Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung, Facebook is often the primary reachable channel.

Facebook Groups: The Commerce Layer Nobody Talks About

Facebook Groups are where real purchase decisions happen in Indonesia. There are tens of thousands of active Groups covering every product category. Each group is a community where members ask for recommendations, post reviews, and share deals.

A positive mention in a relevant Facebook Group can drive hundreds of orders in 48 hours. How to use Groups as a brand: identify the 5 to 10 most active Groups in your product category, engage genuinely before promoting, work with Group admins for sponsored posts, seed micro-KOLs who are active Group members.

Facebook Ads: The Most Cost-Effective Reach in Indonesia

  • Average CPM: USD 1.00 to 2.50
  • Average CPC: USD 0.10 to 0.30
  • Average CPL (lead generation): USD 0.50 to 2.00

For comparison, the same CPM in the UK is USD 7 to 12. In Indonesia you reach 1,000 people for USD 1.50.

Best formats: Lead generation ads (collect WhatsApp contacts directly in-app), Video ads 15 to 60 seconds in Bahasa Indonesia, Carousel ads for multiple products, Messenger/WhatsApp click-to-chat ads.

Facebook Live: Underused and High-Converting

Facebook Live reaches an older, more established consumer demographic. The 30 to 50 age group, which has higher purchasing power than the TikTok-dominant 18 to 25 cohort, is active on Facebook Live. For health products, supplements, household goods, and premium food, Facebook Live reaches buyers that TikTok misses.

Average conversion rate on well-run Facebook Live sessions: 3 to 8% of peak concurrent viewers.

The Facebook and WhatsApp Integration

Facebook owns WhatsApp. In Indonesia, Facebook ads can connect directly to WhatsApp conversations. A consumer sees your ad, taps “Send Message,” and opens a WhatsApp conversation with your brand. For Indonesian consumers who distrust unfamiliar websites but trust WhatsApp, click-to-WhatsApp flows consistently outperform click-to-website flows.
