Distributors in Thailand: How to Find and Work With Them

Thailand’s distribution market is more structured than most foreign brands expect. The modern trade sector is concentrated, the key distributor networks are well-established, and the path to retail shelf space is predictable — if you understand how the system works. Here is the practical picture from the distributor side.

How Thai distribution is organized

Thailand’s consumer goods distribution breaks into three main tiers:

National distributors — companies with relationships across all major retail chains (Lotus’s, Big C, Central Food Hall, Villa Market, Tops Supermarket). They have sales teams, warehousing in Bangkok and secondary hubs (Chiang Mai, Phuket, Khon Kaen), and delivery infrastructure. For international brands, this is the target. Examples: DKSH Thailand, Thai Wah Group distribution arm, and Betagro Trading for food categories.

Regional distributors — cover specific areas. Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai) has its own distributor networks with different buyer relationships from Bangkok. The South (Phuket, Hat Yai) has tourism-driven demand patterns that differ from Bangkok’s urban professional market. National coverage claims from Bangkok distributors sometimes stop at the city limits — verify which provinces they actually service with active sales reps.

Specialist distributors — category specific. Food service distributors supply hotels, restaurants, and catering companies (a significant market in Thailand given tourism). Pharmacy distributors supply Watson’s, Boots, and independent pharmacies. Premium distributor networks (Villa International, for example) service the expat and tourist-premium segment separately from mass retail.

What Thai distributors require to list a new brand

Thailand’s FDA (Food and Drug Administration) requires import notification or registration for food, health, and cosmetic products before commercial sale. The specific requirement depends on category:

  • Food products: import notification, Thai-language label, FDA import number. Process: 1-3 months with a local agent.
  • Health supplements: FDA registration as “health product” or “food supplement” — 3-6 months, stricter documentation requirements.
  • Cosmetics: notification-based system (not pre-market approval) but requires specific documentation including safety assessment and Thai-language label with ingredient list in Thai.
  • Medical devices: full registration, 6-24 months depending on classification.

Most Thai distributors expect you to arrive with either completed registration or a clear plan and timeline for completing it. A distributor who takes your product and handles compliance from scratch is taking significant working capital risk — they will expect either a contribution to compliance costs or significantly favorable commercial terms.

The commercial conversation

Thai distributors are direct about commercial expectations. Expect to discuss:

  • Listing fees: most modern trade chains in Thailand charge a listing fee per SKU to place a new product. These are paid by the distributor but recovered from the brand through deductions against purchase invoices. Expect THB 5,000-25,000 per SKU per chain depending on the retailer’s premium.
  • Promotional support: Thai retailers require co-funded promotions (price reductions, end-cap displays, tasting events) quarterly at minimum. Distributors expect this cost to be shared. Budget 15-20% of year-one revenue for in-store promotional support.
  • Marketing investment: social media campaigns, influencer seeding, and point-of-sale materials are expected from the brand. Thai consumers are social media-driven purchasers — a brand with no Thai Instagram or TikTok presence is a harder sell to retail buyers who need confidence that consumers will actually buy the product.
  • Payment terms: Thailand’s distributor payment cycle is typically 45-60 days. Factor this into your working capital planning.

Finding the right Thai distributor

Trade shows are the most efficient introduction channel: THAIFEX-Anuga Asia (food and beverage, Bangkok, May-June annually), COSMOPROF Asia (Hong Kong, but Thai buyers attend), and the Health & Wellness Expo Bangkok for supplement brands. These events concentrate the relevant buyer network in one place and enable face-to-face introductions that are more productive than any cold email campaign.

The Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Investment (BOI) both maintain distributor directories that are useful for initial research. However, directories are a starting point, not a verification tool. Independent reference-checking — contacting brands that the distributor currently represents and asking about their experience — is the only reliable quality check.

DKSH Thailand is worth a specific mention for international food and consumer goods brands. As a Swiss market expansion company, they have the infrastructure, retail relationships, and compliance capability to handle a new international brand from day one. The trade-off: they take a significant margin (typically 30-40% on the sell-through) and they are selective about the brands they take on. A brand with proven sales history in Singapore or Australia has a better conversation with DKSH than a brand with zero Asia presence.

TikTok and the digital market entry reality

Thailand has 43 million TikTok users. The platform is now a primary purchase channel for food, beauty, and lifestyle categories — not just a discovery channel. Thai distributors are increasingly asking international brands about TikTok content and live selling capability before signing agreements. A brand that brings a TikTok strategy alongside its product line has a meaningfully different conversation with Thai distributors than one that relies entirely on the distributor to build brand awareness from offline retail alone.

The investment: a 3-month TikTok seeding campaign with 10-15 Thai micro-influencers (50,000-300,000 followers) in your category costs approximately USD 8,000-15,000 in talent fees plus production. It generates the social proof that accelerates retail listing decisions by 2-4 months on average. That time saving alone justifies the investment for most international brands.
