Talk to any serious Chinese distributor today; beauty, fashion, lifestyle, food or health. Xiaohongshu comes up fast. Not as a marketing tool. As a way to find brands worth working with.
These people have seen too many overseas brands arrive with weak packaging, no real Chinese feel, and no real talk with consumers. They know Tmall listings and Douyin ads mean little if Chinese people never talk about the product. Xiaohongshu is now their filter.
What Xiaohongshu is

Xiaohongshu started in 2013 as a place for Chinese travellers to share shopping tips. Today it is China’s main lifestyle discovery platform. Users (mostly young city women, but growing) post “notes”; photos, short videos and text that feel like real advice, not ads.
People open it when they want answers. Best cream for sensitive skin. Quiet café in Shanghai. French skincare that works. Bag that looks good and is practical. Saves and real comments matter more than likes. Fake or too commercial content gets ignored.
For distributors this is a live list of what Chinese consumers already like and talk about. A brand that shows up in good notes with real conversation has already started the hard work.
What distributors want to see
After many talks with Chinese partners, three things decide if they contact a brand or skip it.
1. Design and packaging quality Chinese consumers care a lot about how things look. Packaging is part of the product. Clean design, good colours, clear information, quality materials. It must look good in photos and feel good in hand. Distributors reject packaging that looks cheap or only made for Western shelves. They want packaging that works on Xiaohongshu without shame.
2. Real people talking Not just paid posts. Real conversation. Notes where normal users (and some KOLs) share personal experience, answer comments, show the product in daily Chinese life, and get saves. Brands with a small but active Chinese community win. Accounts with only Western models and English text raise doubts. Real interaction proves the brand has started to earn trust.
3. Clear demand Distributors want proof that people already care. Good search results for key words, growing organic notes, saves, and comments that show buying interest. A brand already active on Xiaohongshu is easier to sell into stores or online. The distributor can show real interest instead of starting from zero. In beauty, fashion, wellness and lifestyle, Xiaohongshu is often the first step in the distribution chain.
Why this matters now
Chinese distributors face tough competition and high costs. They cannot take every brand that sends a catalogue. They prefer brands that already look strong and have some Chinese conversation. This lowers their risk.
For international brands this is clear. If your product has strong design, good packaging, and you build real presence on Xiaohongshu (Chinese content, real notes, real engagement), the right distributors will notice you. If you ignore the platform or do it poorly, good partners are much harder to find.
How Chinese distributors find brands on Xiaohongshu – two short examples
Last month a beauty distributor in Shanghai was checking Xiaohongshu for new skincare. He searched “sensitive skin cream natural”. One French brand kept appearing in real user notes. The packaging looked clean and premium in the photos. Chinese girls showed the product in their bathrooms, wrote honest comments, and saved the posts. The brand account replied in Chinese and posted regular notes with Asian skin tones. The distributor contacted the brand the same week. Within three weeks they signed a small first order for three cities. The packaging and the real conversation on Xiaohongshu made the decision easy.
A different story happened with snacks. A food distributor in Guangzhou was looking for healthy imported snacks. He searched “healthy snack no sugar” on Xiaohongshu.
A Scandinavian oat bar brand showed up in many notes. Young office workers posted photos of the pack on their desks, talked about the taste, and asked where to buy more. The packaging was simple, modern, and looked good in photos. Comments were active and positive. The brand had a small but clear Chinese presence. The distributor messaged them, asked for samples, and tested the product with his sales team. Two months later the bars were in 40 convenience stores and on two main e-commerce shops.
In both cases the distributors did not start with email lists or trade shows. They started on Xiaohongshu. They looked for good design, clear packaging, and real people talking about the product. When those three things were strong, the conversation moved fast from platform to first order.
Simple reality
We see it every week. A beauty brand with elegant packaging and some real Chinese user notes gets warm introductions. A fashion brand with strong visual style that already appears in authentic posts gets interest from multi-brand stores. Average design and zero platform activity get almost no replies.
Xiaohongshu does not replace good pricing, reliable supply, or proper papers. But it works as a strong filter. Brands that take it seriously have a better chance with quality Chinese partners. Brands that treat it lightly have a worse chance.
The distributors are already looking. The good ones look carefully.

James, this article changed how we think about Xiaohongshu. We treated it as marketing. Distributors treat it as due diligence.
CapeHarvest Foods (South Africa — biltong, rooibos, healthy snacks, origin foods) now understands the three filters: packaging that photographs well, real people talking in Chinese contexts, and clear demand (saves, comments, search).
The Scandinavian oat bar example is very close to us: simple modern pack, desk photos, “healthy snack no sugar” type searches. African origin is less familiar, so we have to work harder on “how it fits Chinese daily life”.
Questions:
For an unknown food category, which search terms do distributors actually use — “imported snack”, “high protein snack”, “no additive”, or more specific like “rooibos tea” / “beef jerky”?
How many genuine notes / saves are usually enough for a food distributor to reach out, versus still looking like “no conversation”?
Packaging: should we shoot a China-specific pack or lifestyle images before changing the physical pack, so notes look native?
Do brand replies in Chinese on user notes matter as much as the notes themselves?
We would rather look slightly imperfect and real than polished and empty. If you have seen other origin-food brands get inbound distributor interest this way, we would appreciate the pattern. Thank you.
Mike
